I was supposed to name this post "Spider-man 3 is gay!!!", but my wife may read this and she did enjoy the movie. Alright then, so that no one says that I’m a pompous prick I’ll write a fair review.
So I watched the film last weekend with my beloved wife and unborn child :) Anyways, even before I watched the movie a friend of mine already gave me a brief overview of the movie. Basically his review is from the point of view of a comic enthusiast.
So moving on, technically the movie was great. Great fight scenes, great effects and great actors. For the first time, we saw Spider-man faced more than 1 enemy, which was a great step for any movie adaptation (besides Spider-man, only Batman was the only movie who was able to provide its hero with more than 1 villain). Spider-man is a powerful hero and he deserved powerful villains to work with, unlike some stronger pussy-ass hero we know (*cough* *Superman* *cough* *Lex Luther*). The movie had some good character development for its villain but we could have done without it. They really didn’t matter that much anyways.
From a comic lover and a Spider-man fan like myself, you’d be disappointed by how the characters were presented. Spider-man was always sad, he didn’t provide the moviegoers with his usually funny lines and how he always made fun of his enemies despite the overwhelming danger he was faced with. Spider-man was always a fun character and the movie neglected to put that in. They there were some surprising things about the villains: Sandman never flew, even in his sand form… he ain’t that guy from the Mummy movies; Venom wasn’t scary… not even a bit, I guess that was because they had to get Topher Grace to portray the role. Its so depressing that all the villains lately have to be so good looking. Damnit! They’re villains for crying out loud. They have to be at least scary in human form. Geezzz! I can understand they had to put some humanity even in the villainous characters, but who needs good looking villain. Its like trying to make a sexy and good looking zombie… they don’t mix.
The worst thing about this movie was when Peter Parker had that evil streak going. Now that did happen in the comic version, but he was never a jerk. He had a angry mood when he had the symbiot and was uncontrollable at times… but he wasn’t an ass like in the movie. It was just disgusting to watch. And that piano and dance number… oh man! Its so Pinoy! Kulang na lang pumunta siya ng beach at kumanta ng remake ng isang old Elvis song! Sheesh!
I’d say the movie is a good one for the family and for those who have no deep understanding of Spider-man as a whole. I wont tell anybody to not watch it, they’ll definitely enjoy it. Especially the kids. But if it was me, I should have waited for the DVD.
